Top 5 things to know for custom cakes- what to know before ordering

Custom cakes are a great way to make any occasion or event special. Be sure to keep the following things in mind when ordering so you can have the perfect cake for the special day whether it’s a birthday, a baby shower, wedding, new job or quit an old one!

Size of the cake
When you order a custom cake you will need to specify the size or servings. Cakes come in a variety of sizes. The size of the cake will determine how much it costs and how many servings there are. Some numbers that help guage size are guest count and type of party.

Also remember, custom cakes take longer to be made as design time and custom supply sourcing must also be accounted for. Please place your request with earliest advance for an accurate quote. Also important to note, some bakery’s do charge a rush fee for more last minute cake orders.

Vibe of the cake
It is important to know the vibe or style of the cake you are going for. A few reasons here – first it is important that you find a good baker to match the aesthetic you want. For example, Really Cute Sweets does not do cakes that are fondant heavy as that is not a skill I have focused on or a medium I enjoy working with. You want to make sure you are working with the best person for the job so your vision can be achieved.

Cost
The cost of a celebration or wedding cake will depend on various factors including the size of the cake, the design and process work required, the cost of custom supplies (ie flowers) and also possible delivery. Delivery is highly suggested for wedding cakes.

Delivery
When opting for delivery- bakeries have systems, boxes, coolers etc that allow them to transport the cake safely to the venue. As special event cakes are not easily replaced it is highly advisable that clients opt for delivery. The fee will depend on the distance that cake needs to be delivered and also the size of the cake.

If you are having a cake delivered to a venue be sure to inform the baker of any stairs or elevator access. This ensures most optimal delivery.

Set up + Storage
Depending on the nature of the cake some work may need to be done once the cake is on site and set up by the baker. An example would be when the cakes are large with various detail that is best assembled on site or if there are small moving parts that would not transport well in a moving car, some materials are subject to chance due to humidity and best added as close to serving time as possible (ie. fresh edible flowers, some edible prints and wafer paper).
Custom cakes must be stored in a cool, dry place. Most bakers will advise you specific instructions on how to store your cake. Be sure to follow these instructions so the cake doesn’t spoil and stays beautiful for your event.
